Non-additive "expected utility " and observability of preferences: the positions of Jacob Marschak and Paul Samuelson We show that some of the developments of utility theory in the last quarter of the century had been expected to a large extent by Marschak and by Samuelson in their 1950 articles. Both of them investigated the weakening of the independence axiom and reflected on the possibility to test the theory developed by von Neumann and Morgenstem. In exploring the consequences of relaxing the independence axiom, they reached the conclusion that one could not get around the axiom, but for opposite reasons.
